Old Beyond Mortal Reckoning

  1. a Mulg at rest will tend to remain at rest, unless it is acted upon by an outside Food.
  2. once compelled to motion, Mulg will remain in motion.
    Deal With It.
  3. when Mulg's body exerts a force on a second body, it dies.
Everybody knows that Mulg is the best.1  He's got the most toothsome backstory, the meatiest big fists, and the writers give him all the wittiest one-liners.  He's a perpetual fan favorite, a cross-genre break-out character, and the troll softball team's MVP and Home Run Derby winner ten years running.

Unfortunately, his model is one of the last of the old first gen trolls, and it's a touch... small.  It's super characterful, but the proportions just don't match the bulkier scaling of the newer range of dire trolls (particularly those legs).  Being the runt of the litter is not OK for a Mulg model - he's supposed to be the strongest and the best! 2  For this reason, Mulg is a popular conversion project, and a quick image search will turn up a dozen Mulg conversions, ranging from full scratch-builds to the ever popular Extreme Mauler mods.

Mulg

We decided to do one of our own, mixing parts from the Mulg model with another hefty fellow - Reaper's "Golan, Hill Giant".  I went in for a full-body rebuild, mounting Mulg's signature back and shoulders on top Golan's lower torso and legs.  The rear of Mulg's loincloth / skirt, with all the hanging runes and charms, was welded to Golan's backside. We really only used the bottom half of Golan - astute readers might notice other parts of him popping up in later projects.

Mulg got back.  (sorry)

OK, in to the details.  The legs had to be cut up and re-posed a bit to get the pose I wanted.  This, with the weight of the arms, resulted in an extensive network of pinning to hold the whole thing together - nearly every pair of pieces is joined by at least one steel rod.  The sections of the body were patched together with a huge quantity of putty and glue, as shown in the pics.  In several places, I used the same bits of crushed plaster I mentioned in the Mauler entry to add some additional rocky protrusions and details.

The club is built from parts of a tree from the WHFB Giant kit, and the club from another Reaper model, "Krug, Hill Giant".  I'd decided early on that Mulg's club needed to be detachable for ease of transport, and sadly I just couldn't make it work with his iconic rune club.  The original club is just too heavy - it probably contains as much metal as any three human-sized minis.  Every connection I tried broke after a short time.  So I created this facsimile, which is slightly longer, a bit thinner, and FAR lighter.  It is connected to the hand with a simple brass rod and matching tube.

The head ended up being almost as complex an assembly as the rest of the body combined.  I chopped up Mulg's original small-ish head to retrieve what we'll call his "hair" and "beard".  The face itself was made from the head off yet another Reaper mini, a Troll King in this case, combined with lower jaw and mouth (and teeth (and teeth)) from the plastic Blitzer.  The end result looks like a complete mess in these assembly photos - what with every part being a different color - but actually painted up pretty nicely... as you'll see shortly!

A face only a shaman could love.
